The BMW 5 Series is a more conservative and conventional design compared to the outgoing Five. It comes in a similar in form and proportion as the current 3 Series. The way the nose of the car overhangs are remarkably short given modern pedestrian safety regulations; the kidney grille is lower and wider. The creases in the bonnet look give the care a deep and dramatic look. Almost all the extra 80mm wheelbase is on the front wings to keep the engine behind the axle line and the weight distribution in-tact.
The other main features to do with the car's look are definitely the deep feature line running back from the front arches, and the dramatic triple-strake rear lights are also striking. The Cabin has a new softer approach where the old Five’s bluff upright architecture has been changed for the return of BMW’s hallmark driver-focused cocoon. It looks Great. This interior makes you fee more evoked and the material build quality feels sensational.
The Five does not have the initial impact of the old model. It can be seen as controversial, but for entirely different reasons. This new car swaps struts its stuff; is has hydraulic power steering for fully-electric, makes the eight-speed gearbox from the V12 760 available in every model right down to the 520d and comes with a list of optional tech that is arguably unmatched by any other car on sale and made possible only by the massive data-transfer capabilities of its FlexRay electronic architecture.
It is important to consider here than just the looks; the new engine is state of the art and the way the Five drives and functions is set to change just as radically. The car’s launch makes a strong case on power, performance and emissions. Not forgetting we’ve seen them all before in a slightly different tune in other models. It is usual to launch a new model with existing engines then introduce the new motors later to keep the interest up, which could be happening here. The hybrid and the hyper-efficient new 2.0-litre diesel at Geneva, with a V8 diesel and twin-turbo V8 M5 following in 2011 may show a similar result.
